Fall River Jewish community collection

Collection of files on various topics, organizations, families, individuals, and religious and educational institutions associated with the Jewish community of Fall River, Mass. Files contain newspaper clippings, anniversary booklets, photographs and typescript notes. Of special note is the census of Jewish families in Fall River, conducted in 1957. Information formerly in the collection on Temple Beth El has been transferred to MC 75.

Sylvia and Luis Cotta family papers

The collection consists of photographs and ephemera of various members of the Sylvia family, family correspondence from five of the Sylvia brothers (Philip, Antone, Frederick, Lawrence, George) while they served in the military during World War II, and a selection of Philip Sylvia’s Little Compton, Rhode Island well drilling business and personal records.

Pereira Garcia family papers

Dennis Tucker scrapbooks

Collection includes 10 scrapbooks, with overlapping dates; spanning the years 1973-1988. Contents of scrapbooks include newspaper clippings, personal documents and correspondence, and memorabilia such as parking decals. The majority documents crime and public safety events on the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth campus while Dennis Tucker served as an officer. Other items include correspondence and photographs pertaining to his employment at the university.

Portuguese-American oral history interviews

Scope and Contents Collection consists of 87 oral history interviews conducted by UMass Dartmouth students (then SMU) to fulfill course requirements in the sociology department. Course title was “Cultural Reporting,” taught by professors Donna Huse and Bela Feldman Bianco, visiting professor from Brazil. The interviews took place between 1987 and 1990. Divided into three series, the collection consists of subject files, arranged alphabetically (Series I); records of the Building Fund Committee (Series II); and the publication Tifereth Israelight (Series III). The subject files contain copies of the bylaws and charter. Fundraising for the new building, dedicated in 1966, was spearheaded by General Chairman Alan Ades, who donated the records that make up Series II.
