Portuguese-American oral history interviews

 Collection
Identifier: MC-024

Scope and Contents

Collection consists of 87 oral history interviews conducted by UMass Dartmouth students (then SMU) to fulfill course requirements in the sociology department. Course title was “Cultural Reporting,” taught by professors Donna Huse and Bela Feldman Bianco, visiting professor from Brazil. The interviews took place between 1987 and 1990. Most of the interviews were transcribed, and used as the basis for an academic paper, which in most cases is included in the file. Almost all were originally taped on audiotape; 30 of the original tapes were donated by the students with the papers. These have all been transferred to digital format and are stored on master and reference compact discs. All of the subjects are from southeastern Massachusetts, and are of Portuguese descent. Most are immigrants, or are descendants of immigrants from the Azores Islands, mainland Portugal and the Madeira Islands.
