Scope and Contents

Collection consists of 8 items, mostly notebooks and texts used by Keiles as a student in the Textile Engineering major. Courses represented include Designing, Engineering drawing, Cloth Analysis, Microscopy, and Cotton Yarn Preparation. Several of the books contain actual cloth samples, with their analysis. In lieu of textbooks, which were not always readily available in these subjects, instructors distributed mimeographed sheets, which the students then bound into texts. There are 2 examples of these.

Biographical / Historical

Joel S. Keiles graduated from New Bedford Textile Institute in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science in Textile Engineering. He was a member of the first class of students to enter NBTI with the intention of attending for four years, in pursuit of Bachelor of Science degrees. NBTI had only received approval to grant bachelor degrees in 1948, and beginning with 1950, 42 degrees were awarded. After graduating, Keiles served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. He worked as a textile engineer for J.W. Valentine Co., Inc. in New York City from 1956 to 1958, Virginia Mills, Inc., New York, NY from 1958 to 1964, and Stonecutter Mills Corp., also in NYC, from 1964 to his retirement in 1991.
