Biographical / Historical
The Portuguese American Historical Foundation was incorporated November 1, 1991 with the following officers – Mary Fonseca as president, Albert S. Domingos as treasurer, and Joseph M. Perreira as clerk. Directors included Alfredo P. Alves, Frances Gracia, Dolores Domingos, Evelyn Almeida, Mary Carvalho, William Dos Reis, Filomena Resendes and Leo Medeiros. The foundation’s purpose was to “represent the Portuguese of greater Fall River, past and present, with an ongoing display of exhibits and artifacts, to keep and record a list of Portuguese Americans in the greater Fall River area, and to recognize and acknowledge achievements of reasonable significance by persons who shall or have expressed a sincere interest in and a respect for people or objects of Portuguese heritage.” The foundation sponsored an exhibit of nativity scenes in 1993/1994, an exhibit on the Flemish connection in the Azores in 1994, and several smaller exhibits at various locations. Members collected recent and historical materials with the intent of documenting the Portuguese in Fall River.
