Scope and Contents

Collection consists of the letters written by two brothers from the Daniels family of New Bedford, MA, Private Robert Daniels and Sgt. Richard Daniels, during their time in the service during World War II. Collection also includes some photographs.

Biographical / Historical

Robert (Bobby) Daniels was the youngest son of Rose and Manuel Daniels. He was born in 1923 and died in 2005. He enlisted in the Air Force June 30, 1943 and was discharged March 23, 1946. According to the family, he stayed stateside and participated in the atom bomb testing program in New Mexico. His brother, Richard Daniels, was in the 101st Medical Regiment, then assigned to the 121st Medical Battallion of the U.S. Army, based in San Francisco, CA. He served in the Pacific, was promoted to Captain, and after the war, became a pharmacist. They are all addressed to their family as "Dear Gang" or "Dear Gangsters." Locations on the stationery for Bobby include Harlingen Army Airfield in Harlingen, Texas and the Alamagordo Army Air Base in Alamagordo, New Mexico.
