Biographical / Historical
Manuel Mendes Lopes was born in São Paulo, Serra da Estrela, Portugal in 1895 to Manuel Mendes and Maria Lopes. He moved to New Bedford in 1913 and worked as a weaver in local cotton mills until his retirement. He was married to Angelina Antunes Lopes, who passed away in 1996; they were married for 81 years. They had two daughters Deolinda (L. Sylvia) and Lillian (Travers). Mr. Lopes passed away at the age of 103 in 1998.
