Scope and Contents

Collection consists of items given as gifts of appreciation to the University for hosting the team and providing practice fields. Signed soccer balls and shirt and buttons may have been collected at some point during the team’s stay at UMass Dartmouth. UMass Dartmouth PhotoGraphics has custody of negatives of pictures taken of the team. Slides were transferred from the Publications office accession.

Biographical / Historical

In 1994 the United States hosted the World Cup Soccer tournament. Venues included Boston (Foxboro Stadium), Chicago, Cincinnati, Washington, DC, New York, Philadelphia and Detroit. Fall River and New Bedford were chosen as host cities, and UMass Dartmouth was chosen as one of the official World Cup practice sites, hosting the Bolivian National Team for three weeks, June 9-28, 1994. In conjunction with local New Bedford and Fall River city officials, UMass Dartmouth organized a welcome for the team, provided lodging, arranged for meals, and provided practice and other recreational facilities. Team Bolivia conducted youth soccer clinics in New Bedford and Fall River, and were available to the press. At the closing ceremony, Team Bolivia presented UMass Dartmouth with pewter and silver plate gifts from Bolivia.
