Biographical / Historical
Dr. Herschel Heinz was born in Chelsea, Mass in 1900 to immigrant parents from Germany and Hungary. He attended Harvard College (class of 1921) and Harvard Medical School, graduating with a medical degree in 1925. He interned at St. Luke's Hospital and Providence Lying-In Hospital, where he delivered his first baby when the hospital opened in 1926. He opened an obstetrics practice in 1927 in New Bedford and was a member of the St. Luke's Hospital staff until his death in 1967. He died in a house fire. He was the first obstetrician to practice in the city of New Bedford.
