Biographical / Historical
Around 1885 or 1886 the Catholic parish of Saint George started as a mission of the parishes of Notre Dame and Saint Anne in Fall River, and served the largely French Canadian immigrants who worked in the Westport textile factory. In 1914 the "Westport Factory" mission was accorded the status of a parish by the diocese of Fall River. The parish bounderies incorporated residents of the towns of Westport and Dartmouth. After a period of growth, the parish constructed a new building at 12 Highland Street in Westport, completed in 1923.
