Biographical / Historical
The Sisterhood of Tifereth Israel began in 1922 with Mrs. Jacob Horvitz as president. This organization began to help the old synagogue on the corner of sixth and Madison Streets by raising funds through dances, parties, and rummage sales. From funds raised, they equipped the synagogue with beautiful lighting fixtures and coverings for the Ark and Bible rest. Through the years the Thanksgiving Ball became an annual event held at the New Bedford Hotel each year; everyone in the city and beyond attended this well-planned and beautiful event until 1975. The Sisterhood also helped the synagogue move to its present location in the West End on Hawthorn Street across from Buttonwood Park, and its role has continued as a support for the synagogue and the Hebrew School. For many years it supported Girl Scout Troop Today, Sisterhood sponsors many events for its members who enjoy dinners, book reviews, and kiddush lunches after services. Dorothy Siegel and Susan Levin are the presidents this year.
