Biographical / Historical
A set of 227 photographs taken by Norman A. Sylvia on behalf of the Southeastern Massachusetts University Building Authority from January 1987 to October 1988. The set, originally in 2 vinyl binders, documents the construction of the Cedar Dell Village apartments on a monthly basis. These townhouse-style student residences are arranged in two villages of 68 apartments each, totaling 804 beds. It opened to SMU students in the Fall of 1989. The Village is located on 16 acres along the northern rim of Cedar Dell Pond, on land that was mixed forest and farmland. Total cost of the project was 19 and a half million dollars, financed with revenue bonds issued by the SMU Building Authority. The project architect was Architectural Resources Cambridge, Inc. An open house and opening ceremony was held on October 27, 1989.
