Biographical / Historical

WUMD began as a low-power FM radio station with the call letters WUSM in 1972. In the fall of 1974, WUSM upgraded uts oiwer to 1200 watts and moved into the second floor of the Campus Center. On January 15th, 1989 the station changed its call letters to WSMU. It started streaming online in 1999. One June 10, 2006 WSMU moved from 91.1 on the FM dial to 89.3 and changed its call letters to WUMD. At that time the station operated at a licensed power of 9600 watts and broadcast with state of the art HD technology. On Monday June 26th, 2017, WUMD FM 89.3 closed its chapter as independent college radio when it sold its FM license to Rhode Island Public Radio and began as an online only station, broadcasting at www.wumd.rocks. Before 2017 the station trained volunteer djs from the local and campus community who put together programming on a variety of types of music.
