The AAUP is a national association with chapters at individuals universities. The AAUP develops the standards and procedures that maintain quality in education and academic freedom in this country's colleges and universities. It defines fundamental professional values and standards for higher education, advances the rights of academics, particularly as those rights pertain to academic freedom and shared governance, and promots the interests of higher education teaching and research. The SMTI chapter was a continuation of the Bradford Durfee College of Technology and New Bedford Institute of Technology chapters; it was re-invigorated with new membership from the younger faculty in 1966 under the leadership of its first president, Richard Reis. In these early years before creation of the faculty union, the AAUP chapter was where issues of salary, class load and other faculty issues were discussed.
