Biographical / Historical

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Alumni Association, Inc. is a membership organization with the purpose of promoting and advancing the general well being of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth by fostering the interest of the alumni and other individual groups. It also provides services to alumni of the University, raises funds for the benefit of the University and/or the Alumni Association, and fosters and strengthens a “mutually helpful relationship among the alumni, the faculty, the student body, and the administration of the University. To be eligible for membership, one must be a graduate of or have completed at least 30 credit hours at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth or any of its predecessor institutions. The Alumni Association is headed by a Board of Directors. A Director of Alumni Affairs coordinates the affairs of the Association, implements policy and programs as set forth by the Board of Directors, and is responsible for maintaining alumni records and all alumni publications and communications. The Alumni Affairs Office was established in January 1969, as was the SMTI Alumni Association. Its first paid director was Thomas Mulvey, who worked part time. Alumni Council, consisting of representatives from each of the graduating classes, was formed in June of 1969, to advise the directors and act as liaisons to the Board of Directors of the association. Three awards of merit, the Alumni Service Award, the Alumni Achievement Award, and the University Service Award, were created in February 1970. The Alumni Association has published journals and newsletters under the following titles: the Alumni Bulletin (1969-1975), Campanile (1975-1978), Compass (1978-?), a journal published six times annually, incorporating “Campanile’ as the alumni news section, and UMass Dartmouth Note(1990s). The current publication is UMass Dartmouth, published 4 times per year, with a magazine annual report once a year.
