Scope and Contents
Collection consists of the administrative correspondence between Horace M. Chase, Director of Building Construction, Division of Building Construction, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and SMTI president Joseph Leo Driscoll and copies of appraisals of the land and buildings acquired through taking to become the site for the future campus of SMTI. Appraisals include original photographs of existing land and properties as of 1965 and one large map/plan.

Biographical / Historical
In 1960 the new SMTI Board of Trustees and the state Division of Building Construction, began the process of selecting and acquiring 500 acres in Dartmouth for the site of the new campus. The acquisition through taking affected 19 landowners on Chase Road, Old Westport Road, Lucy Little Road, and Hazelhurst Road in North Dartmouth. Early appraisals were done in 1961 by Arthur B. Sherman and A.J. Langlois. Appraisals were done in 1964 for the properties by both Gilbert C. Oliveira, and Norman Honchu; another set was done in 1965 by Norman F. Hochu.
