Biographical / Historical

The Family Business Center was jointly established by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and the private sector in 1996 to provide support to family owned businesses operating in Southeastern Massachusetts. Membership was open to businesses of any size owned and managed by at least one family member. Through the faculty at UMD and the Southern New England School of Law, the Center was able to offer technical assistance and legal advice to members. The Center recruited experts in the field of family business to lead educational programs and also offered an opportunity for family business owners to build relationships with each other. The Family Business Center was located on the UMD campus but meetings were often held at White’s of Westport. John K. Bullard, a former mayor of New Bedford, was the executive director from 1998-2002. Donald Berube, the Director of Alumni Affairs at UMD, became the director in 2002.
