Biographical / Historical
Joseph Leo Driscoll served as President of UMD 1962-1971, when it was known first as Southeastern Massachusetts Technological Institute (SMTI) and then Southeastern Massachusetts University (SMU). His official investiture was July 9, 1966. Amid controversy and pressure from the students, faculty and Board of Trustees, he was asked to resign July 22, 1971. He was allowed to remain until the end of his contract with the exception that he take one year leave of absence, commencing on Sept. 1, 1971. His final resignation took effect August 31, 1972.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
Correspondence files are retrospective, transferred from the "red book" collection, U10 BOX8 Folders 10 - 14; U10 BOX9 All Folders; and U10 BOX10 Folders 1 - 2. Three boxes of additional subject files added in 2019 were recelaimed from various subjects of the red book collection.
