Biographical / Historical
The UMass Dartmouth history project began when retired history professor Fred Gifun was hired by Chancellor Jean MacCormack to research and write a history of UMass Dartmouth from the formation of SMTI (Southeastern Massachusetts Technological Institution) in 1960 through the 40th anniversary year, 2006. The result of this effort was the publication of UMass Dartmouth 1960-2006: Trials and Triumph, printed by Reynolds-DeWalt in New Bedford, MA in 2006. Prof. Gifun, with the assistance of several graduate students, interviewed over 100 individuals as background research. He also used the Archives and Special Collections extensively. Art Education graduate student and book designer Deb Smook assembled and scanned the images used in the book.
