Scope and Contents

Collection consists of negatives taken by Torch photographers for publication in the paper. Only a small selection of the negatives were chosen for publication, but this collection represents a very large body of work created to that end. There are a very limited number of contact sheets accompanying the frames. Each roll of film appears to be a different subject; subjects include sporting events, theatrical and musical events and shots of individuals used in “Campus Voices,” an opinion feature of the paper. Negatives cover the years 1983-1998 only, and are arranged by year in three-ring binders. Individual frames are not identified. You must use the printed copies of the Torch to identify them. Copies of the Torch are available in hard copy in the archives and on microfilm. It is not known where the earlier Torch negatives are.

Biographical / Historical

The Torch is the student newspaper of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. It began as the SMTI Torch in December 1965 after a one-year stint as the SMTI Hexagon (there were December 1964 and March 1965 issues only). SMTI became SMU in 1969 and The Torch was then the SMU Torch. In 1964 it was published quarterly, and in 1965 bi-monthly. In 1966 it was tri-monthly. It was published weekly starting in November 1966. It is still published weekly during the fall and spring semesters only. In 1991 SMU became UMass Dartmouth. The newspaper is still published under the name Torch. Since 2002 there has been an online version as well.
