Biographical / Historical

Sylvia Finger was born in Delaware in 1895. Her mother was from New York while her father was from Russia. She married Samuel Finger in 1920. During her marriage they moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts where, as a member of the Tifereth Israel congregation, she became very active in the local Jewish community. She was a member of the Greater New Bedford Women’s Division for the State of Israel Bonds, a charter member of Hadassah, a member of the Brandies University Women’s Auxiliary, and president of the Tifereth Israel Synagogue (from 1936-1937). For her leadership she received many awards during her lifetime, including the Standard Bearer Charm for the Bar Mitzvah Year, Jewish Advocate Award, Torah Fund Award, Community Leadership Award (of the National Benefactors Society of Torah Fund), the Eleanor Roosevelt Humanities Award and many more. Sylvia passed away October of 1982 at the age of 87.
