Biographical / Historical
In the summer of 1982, Peggy Lyons was the only woman of the 14-person crew, who consisted of 8 Cape Verdeans and 6 Americans, to sail aboard the Schooner Ernestina on its journey to the U.S., back from Mindelo, Cape Verde. Peggy was a licensed captain, originally from New York, and had her own 30-foot Sloop Repose. She had a true passion for sailing. Peggy worked at a volunteer to repair and retrieve Ernestina, after being dismast in her first voyage back in the U.S. in 1976.
Biographical / Historical
The bulk of the collection is a photograph album and series of 16 audiocassette recordings documenting the 1982 voyage. It also includes loose items: newspaper articles, certificates, and correspondence.
