Biographical / Historical
The Engineering Libraries Division (ELD) is a part of the American Society for Engineering Education. It is a forum for library professionals and others concerned with meeting the information needs of engineering faculty and students. The division was accepted into the ASEE in 1967. Their goal is to initiate, support, and promote the exchange of information in engineering as well as strengthen the role of the library/information center as an integral part of engineering education. The division meets monthly and at the Society’s annual conference held in June.
ELD was preceded by the Engineering School Libraries Committee, which was organized by a group of engineering librarians in late 1941 and granted official committee status in 1942. The original members of the ESLC were librarians from New England and New York. As librarian membership in ASEE increased in the 1940s and 1950s, librarians from other parts of the U.S. joined ESLC. The ESLC was an active group, organizing programs at a number of ASEE regional and national conferences in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. The ESLC is often confused with the Engineering School Libraries Section, which was a section within the Association of College and Reference Libraries from 1942 through 1951.
